Step 1: Server Installation
Boot the server into the ESXi installer. If you don’t know how to create bootable media, you can find the How-to here.
When the installer loads up, the first screen will be welcome/compatibility screen.
Hit enter to continue. The following screen will be the EULA screen. Hit F11 to continue. The installer will then scan the hardware and present the storage selection screen. In this case, I only have one drive available. Simply select the drive that you would like to install ESX on and hit enter.
The next screen will be the Keyboard layout selection. Hit enter for the default or select the correct keyboard layout and hit enter to continue.
The following screen will be to set the ESX root password. Enter this password now, this password can be changed later.
The following screen will either be errors and warnings. If you have no errors or warnings, this screen may not appear.
The last screen will be to confirm the installation. Hit F11 to start the installation
When the installation is complete, the installer will tell you to remove the installation media and reboot. Unplug the installation media and hit F11 to reboot the server.
Step 2: ESXi basic configuration
When the server boots your installation will look something like this:
Form here hit F2 to begin configurations. Type in the password to the root user. Select Configure Management network from this list.
Select IPv4 Configuration to set the IP of the ESX server.
Hit enter to commit the configuration
Select DNS Configuration. From here you can set the DNS servers and the Hostname of the ESX server. Hit OK to commit the configuration.
Hit Custom DNS Suffixes. This is where you can put the local domain for DNS resolution. Hit OK to commit the configuration.
Hit escape to finish the network configuration. This will bring up the confirmation request to reset the management network. Hit Y to continue.
To test the configuration. Select “Test Management Network”. Select the servers you would like to ping and resolve then hit enter to start the test.
When the test is complete you should see all 3 say OK.
If everything comes out ok, put the IP address into your browser to open the management GUI.
